Established in 1980 in response to demand from the local offshore and shipbuilding industries, UNO’s School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering provides the maritime industry with prepared graduates and supports industry progress through applied and basic research. The program offers a BS in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME), an MS in Engineering with a NAME concentration and a Ph.D. in Engineering and applied science. Graduates are in demand and frequently land positions in the industry well before they graduate.

The mission of the School is to provide well-educated graduates for the advancement and perpetuation of the maritime industry, to elevate the School and UNO in prominence as valued contributors to the marine industry, to maintain and advance naval architecture and marine engineering through research and education, and to strengthen ties with the marine industry, both nationally and locally.  The undergraduate program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

Facilities

The School is located in a state-of-the-art, nine-story building that houses specialized laboratory facilities including:

  • 128-foot towing tank with 15-foot by 17-foot cross section for model tests of vessels and offshore structures in waves and calm water, as well as shallow water with current
  • Model shop for projects and towing tank model and experiment manufacture
  • UNO Structural Test System, which includes computer-controlled hydraulic actuators for testing aluminum, steel and composite ship structural components
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD) laboratory with programs on operations, ship safety, reliability, maintenance, and performance simulation of propulsion systems

The School also has an off-site facility, the UNO-Avondale Maritime Technology Center of Excellence, which houses the Simulation Based Design Center, promoting the use of electronic visualization, virtual reality and numerical simulation in both design and construction.
